AVERY ISLAND, La., March 13, 2008 – This year McIlhenny Company celebrates the 140th anniversary of its iconic brand – Original TABASCO® brand Pepper Sauce. Since it was first created in 1868, this American staple has defined and evolved the way people spice up their favorite foods and drinks. In celebration of this storied history and landmark occasion, McIlhenny Company has released 2,500 bottles of a special Avery Island Reserve sauce - a small batch of TABASCO® Sauce made from the finest Avery Island peppers that has historically been available only to family and close friends.
Avery Island, Louisiana, the birthplace of TABASCO® Sauce and
still the location where the famous sauce is made – much as it was
140 years ago – is actually a natural salt deposit rising above
the bayous of southwest Louisiana. This picturesque family seat is
peppered with live oak trees covered in Spanish moss – a setting
still reminiscent of those fabled days in the late 1800s. Avery Island
Reserve, as unique and captivating as the location from which it takes
its name, is made from hand-selected Tabasco peppers, white vinegar and
pure Avery Island salt.
“We are extremely proud of our company’s independent,
private tradition and its history of manufacturing high-quality,
innovative products,” said Paul McIlhenny, president and CEO of
McIlhenny Company. “And we celebrate the 140th anniversary of
TABASCO® by offering this very special Avery Island Reserve to those
who share our passion for peppers and our innate aversion to bland
food.”
In late 2007, in anticipation of the 140th anniversary, McIlhenny
Company published TABASCO®: An Illustrated History. This
comprehensive and lavishly illustrated book, written by company
historian and curator Dr. Shane Bernard, traces the origins of the
McIlhenny family, beginning in the early 1800s with the birth of
inventor and company founder Edmund McIlhenny and ending in present day
Avery Island, Louisiana. Stops along the way highlight the adventurous
lives of McIlhenny family members and the rise of TABASCO® to iconic
status in global culinary and popular culture, as well as the places
TABASCO® Sauce has traveled since its creation in 1868 (from the
peaks of Everest to the MREs of American soldiers abroad to planetary
orbit aboard SkyLab) and the U.S. presidents who have called
TABASCO® a favorite. In fact, President Eisenhower’s own
recipe for barbecue sauce, which uses TABASCO® Sauce, is included in
this comprehensive book. Now entering its second printing,
TABASCO®:
An Illustrated History is available online and at bookstores nationwide
for $49.95 (242 pages).
